Larkin worked for seven years as the on-site acting coach for the CBS soap opera As the World Turns. In the 90s he also worked as a director on the now-defunct NBC soap opera Another World.

In 1984 Larkin was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in the category of "Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series" for his work on The Edge of Night. The award eventually went to Larry Bryggman of As the World Turns.

Prior to becoming an actor, Larkin worked as a piano mover. He says that he enjoys acting much more.

Larkin: (on Guiding Light) The best soap romance I had, which still stands to date, was one Kim [Zimmer] and I had in what were known as the "Yonder barn shows." The way we got there was kind of goofy - I think we ended up being kidnapped and kicked out of an airplane with parachutes, and we crashed through the roof of this barn. We had this lovely series of scenes in which the two of us just led this very simple life and learned to love each other for who we were as opposed to back in Springfield.

Larkin: (on his fondest Christmas memory) At 12-years-old on Christmas, I received something that I had always wanted... an electric guitar. There it was under the Christmas tree, all wrapped up. I had always wanted to play just like The Beatles' George Harrison. I took lessons, played in a band, and eventually passed it on the my nephews.
